What are the Precinct Leadership Elections?
Precinct Leadership Elections are how the Kentucky Democratic Party builds its leadership at the neighborhood level. Each precinct selects a MAN, and WOMAN and a YOUTH (under 35) to represent that precinct in your County Democratic Party.
When and where are these elections held?
Precinct Elections at held on April 17, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at your polling place (the place where you vote.) This date and time is the same for every precinct in every county.
Who can participate?
Any registered Democrat in your precinct can attend, run, nominate or vote in the elections. You must be a registered Democrat in your precinct by March 25.
What the responsibilities of precinct leaders?
As identified by the KY Democratic Party, the duties and responsibilities of precinct leaders are:
Do I have to run as a precinct leader, can’t I just vote for someone else?
Absolutely. You do not have to run, but we encourage everyone who attends to think about it, especially if the election is sparsely attended and there isn’t a representative for your gender or age.
How long do I serve?
Precinct Leaders serve for a term of four years, or until a new representative needs to be appointed.
What time should I arrive?
Arrive around 9:30 a.m. just to be sure.
Should I bring someone else?
YES! Bring as many registered Democrats as you know in your precinct. If they don’t want to run as a precinct leader, they can VOTE FOR YOU.
Will my polling place be open?
Your polling place may or may NOT be open on a Saturday (churches, schools, etc.) Please check around the doors, as most meetings will be informal and held wherever there is space. If you have trouble finding the meeting, please call Jennifer Hicks at the KY Democratic Party (859-553-1675 or 859-695-4828)
What if nobody shows up? Is there still an election?
YES. If NOBODY other than yourself arrives, you and whomever else you bring constitute the meeting. You can run the meeting and the election (even if it’s just you by yourself). Please call Jennifer Hicks at the KY Democratic Party (859-553-1675 or 859-695-4828) for instructions on how to proceed. You may have to wait there until paperwork is delivered to you, but DO NOT LEAVE.
In Fayette County, you can also call Jeremy Horton (859-539-7587).
How are the elections run?
We’ve elected the three precinct leaders. Now what?
Once a Man, a Woman and a Youth (under 35) are selected as your Precinct Committee, these three shall immediately select a “Precinct Chair”, who coordinates the activities of the Committee.
That it?
Almost. After all the proceedings are over, the Permanent Chair of the meeting (not necessarily the Precinct Chair), shall fill out, sign and deliver the official paperwork to the County Party Chair within 48 hours.
What happens if there are MANY people? Will I have to vote for someone I don’t know? Will it be intimidating?
Precinct elections are a great way to meet Democrats in your neighborhood. The elections themselves should go quickly and easily, but there is the possibility of conflict, and it’s natural that there would be more than one person interested in a leadership position. The voting need not be contentious, and the Chair of the meeting should allow for a brief statement if you would like to say a little something about yourself to the rest of the attendees before voting. Important: do not be swayed into NOT RUNNING. Your participation is important. If you feel there is a problem, or if you feel uncomfortable, immediately call the Chair of your County Party or Jennifer Hicks at the KY Democratic Party (859-553-1675 or 859-695-4828).
In Fayette County, you can also call Jeremy Horton (859-539-7587).
