Gov. Dean's Ol' Kentucky Home

It was standing room only and roars of enthusiasm in "red-state" Kentucky for Howard Dean and his message of hope for the Democratic Party Sunday night.

More than 400 people braved single-digit temperatures and overflowed the auditorium in Lexington to hear Howard Dean tell us how to take back the country by strengthening the Democratic Party below the Mason-Dixon Line. "We are all purple states," said the Governor, to huge applause.

The event, hosted by Change for Kentucky (the DFA coalition group in KY) raised over $10,000 for Democracy for America and a priceless amount of publicity and good will for Gov. Dean's campaign of reform.

Several local and state lawmakers and party leaders were among 50 people who attended an earlier private reception for Governor Dean, including the new chair of the state Democratic Party Jerry Lundergan, former governor and new state Senator Julian Carroll, Lexington Mayor Teresa Isaac and our Dean Dozen candidate Virginia Woodward, the new state senator embroiled in a court battle with Republicans to claim her seat.

Governor Dean also met privately with Change for Kentucky members, who gave him a scrapbook of pictures and articles of our activities dating back to our first meeting in March 2003. Governor Dean said it meant a lot to him because he had not had much chance during the campaign to save pictures or
articles.

Many people who attended told us later in moving terms how much Governor Dean's presence and words inspired them, especially coming at the end of a depressing Inauguration Week. Gov. Dean left with words of hope that Democrats in the South continue to speak loudly about the shared American values that bring us together.

The optimism and enthusiasm was tangible. No one who was there could doubt that Kentucky will not be a "red state" for long.

Howard Dean Reception/Rally in Lexington

Last night (Jan. 23) over 400 grassroots Democrats (and some Independents, Greens, and McCain Republicans) from across Kentucky braved the cold and the snow to listen to Gov. Howard Dean talk about his vision for the future of the Democratic Party.

It was an amazing night, full of energy and enthusiam. November is officially over, and now we rebuild to fight.

A longer post (with photos) coming ASAP. Check back soon.

Howard Dean Comes to Lexington

It's been a marvel of a poorly kept secret, but as many of you know, Howard Dean is coming to Lexington this Sunday, January 23.

Gov. Dean is coming to Lexington for two reasons:

1) to thank Change for Kentucky supporters across the state for the hard work we've done over the past 18 months- working for candidates, raising money, walking precincts and helping to re-energize the Democratic Party.

2) to spend some time listening to the grassroots Democrats in Kentucky; and talk to us about his vision for the future of the Democratic Party. Gov. Dean is running for the Chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee, and coming to Kentucky is a great indication of his committment to making Democrats a "50-State" Party again.

UPDATE: we have reached our attendance limit for this event. We can no longer take reservations, and there are no plans to have open seating.

Perhaps we can get Gov. Dean to come back! Please JOIN Change for Kentucky today and get on our mailing list for more events like this!

MeetUp is Wednesday & Major Announcement

The Fayette Co. Democracy for America/Change for Kentucky MeetUp is this Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 7:00 at the Central Public Library in downtown Lexington.

There are other KY MeetUps on Wednesday in Louisville, Paducah, Ashland, Somerset, Ft. Thomas, and Hopkinsville, along with other meetings in January in Frankfort and Madisonville.  Please click the links to visit their MeetUp site or to send an email to the County Coordinator near you.

The main part of this month's agenda is a mini-workshop using Professor George Lakoff's new DVD called "How Democrats and Progressives Can Win" to guide the discussion. We will also give CFK News, and give an update on Virginia Woodward's court case.

BE SURE TO COME TO THIS MEETING: We have a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT that you will not want to miss. This is our MOST EXCITING announcement yet, and if you are at your MeetUp on Wednesday, you will be the first to know (and you're going to want to know first; trust us...)

See you Wednesday at the MeetUp!

P.S. We may have an ugly situation brewing in Frankfort tomorrow (Jan. 4). The right-wing Republicans are threatening to not seat Virginia on this first day of the KY Legislative Session, even though she was certified the winner of the election, AND was sworn in by a Jefferson Co. Judge on Saturday. Many people are meeting at the Capitol at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, ready to make some noise if this transpires. If you can make it, please come to Frankfort tomorrow to join Virginia. Let's give David William and the Republicans a taste of their own medicine...
