On May 21-22, 65 leaders from the entire breadth and width of Kentucky forfeited their beautiful spring weekend to attend the 2005 Change for Kentucky State Summit and Training Workshop, held in Shepherdsville, KY, south of Louisville. The goal of the meeting was to get all the DFA/Change for Kentucky organizations together in one room, provide tools for organizing chapters, give advice on campaign finance, blogging and message framing, and hold a little intense precinct math training to get everyone focused on Fall 2005 (when primary candidates will announce, and Change for Kentucky groups will be there, ready to work and help good candidates win!)

Among the guest speakers were Ky Treasurer Johnathan Miller, Ky Senator Ernesto Scorsone and State Auditor Crit Luallen, whose closing remarks Sunday touched on the hope of struggling Kentuckians, as exemplified by the surprising rise of grassroots initiative in the context of yet another progress-halting scandal in Frankfort.
DFA Executive Director Tom Hughes gave an emotional and rousing Keynote Speech on the importance of the work we are doing, especially in states like Kentucky, where grassroots organizing may have the most long-term effect. During the afternoon sessions, Tom even jumped in with a handful of magic markers and led a "layman's" discussion on campaign finance.

It was a great weekend, and a great start to the coming summer and fall. All participants departed Sunday in a revival spirit, confident that, with our dedication and our passion being focused from the "blue-grassroots" up, Kentucky can soon elect a sane administration whose aims are directed no longer to special interests, but rather to governance of the people, by the people and for the people.
