Change for Kentucky, the statewide grassroots political organization built from the presidential campaign of Gov. Howard Dean, announces its first-ever “Change for Kentucky 12” — twelve candidates from across the state who will receive support and resources from the 6000 grassroots organizers, volunteers and supporters of Change for Kentucky.
Change for Kentucky is a non-partisan Kentucky Political Action Committee committed to supporting common sense candidates who are fiscally responsible and socially progressive. During the coming election, Change for Kentucky will provide grassroots support to each of the “CFK 12” candidates. This support includes providing precinct walkers, phone bank callers, field organizers and other volunteer efforts throughout the campaign.
“Grassroots support is an ever-increasing priority for candidates, especially those in smaller races with limited fundraising,” says Jane Jensen, Co-Founder and Field Director of Change for Kentucky. “We will provide a healthy dose of ‘people-powered’ energy to these 12 candidates who have shown vision and commitment to helping change the political conversation in Kentucky.”
Change for Kentucky is also working in partnership with Democracy for America to identify those Kentucky candidates who might qualify for inclusion on the “Dean Dozen”, Democracy for America’s bi-weekly endorsement of candidates from across the country. “Dean Dozen” endorsement exposes candidates to the 250,000 Democracy for America supporters nationwide and could provide those candidates thousands of the low-dollar contributions made famous through the Dean campaign.
Democracy for America and Change for Kentucky both look to support good candidates in tough races apart from ideology or party politics. “Not all of the Change for Kentucky 12 candidates are ‘liberal’ candidates,” says Jeremy Horton, Change for Kentucky’s Co-Founder and Political Director. “In fact, more than a few hold particular positions upon which we disagree; but these candidates are in important races against opponents whose victory would ensure the continuation and growth of a divisive and extremist right-wing agenda.”
The Change for Kentucky 12 candidates are:
Adam Smith- U.S. House of Representatives, KY 2nd District
Virginia Woodward- Kentucky Senate, 37th District
Ruth Ann Palumbo- Kentucky House of Representatives, 76th District
J. Ross Stinetorf- Circuit Judge, 22nd District Family Court
Tom Blues- Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council, 2nd District
Ralph Long- Kentucky House of Representatives, 45th District
Wanda Mattingly- Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council, 9nd District
Jim Wayne- Kentucky House of Representatives, 35th District
Mary Lou Marzian- Kentucky House of Representatives, 34th District
Susan Westrom- Kentucky House of Representatives, 79th District
Rick Blackwell- Louisville Metro Council, 12th District
Kathryn Groob- Kentucky Senate, 23rd District
kathy groob, will be our next female gov.
Posted by: stan shockey at July 23, 2004 12:00 PMKathy Groob is the real deal. She'll be a good senator but Fury Perez will be the next governor.
Posted by: Fury Perez at August 20, 2004 12:00 AMNon-partisan my ass -- 12 Democrats, and you are even politicizing a circuit judge's race just bedause you hate Tim Philpot. There's a reason Dean wasn't nominated -- he's certifiable. Those of you who follow him, and believe the crap he spewed like Bush knew 9/11 was coming but did not try to stop it, are certifiable too.
Your incuments, like Marzian and Westrom, will probably win. Adam Smith doesn't have a prayer against Ron Lewis. And you are working against probably the best council member in Lexington, in Jaques Wigginton.
November is going to be fun to watch. Your side is going to get its ass kicked so badly that you'll think you were Allan Houston's Tennessee team getting beat 101-40 in the SEC tournament by UK about 10 years back.
Posted by: nonya a/k/a KPAC Jr. at August 22, 2004 04:13 AMI believe there is hope for changing Kentucky politics when I read about groups such as yours, citizens working for change. It is a well known fact that the "good ole buddy boy" system is alive and kicking in our bluegrass state. From the capital on down, the mentality is you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. As for Judge Tim Philpot, he lost the election for circuit judge in Fayette County last November but then his buddy Fletcher just "appointed" him the next month to the bench.
Philpot is featured in a front page article in the Herald-Leader Sunday August 22, 2004. Seems he proved yet again how biased he is by refusing to recuse himself from a case where Scott Crosbie,
an attorney for the father in a custody case had donated money to his present campaign and also volunteered to "hold a fundraiser" at his home.
Philpot is getting a reputation for ruling against women in cases before him and he allows his personal views on religion and marriage to influence his judicial decisions. I am voting for Ross Stinetorf because he is the better candidate.
I urge voters to choose wisely in the judicial race because we need a judge in Lexington who is not "connected" to the buddy boy system and who will read case file before rendering a decision and who will avoid conflicts of interest in his position as judge. I believe Ross Stinetorf to be the best choice for Lexington.

The Herald-Leader has always hated Tim Philpot. They hate him because his dad was Ford Philpot, a well-known preacher. This would not have been front-page news had it not been the son of Ford Philpot, and you know it and I know it and anyone with two brain cells knows it.
Having said that, this was about as fair of a hatchet job as one could expect from the H-L. Philpot has done nothing that other judges haven't done -- accepted campaign contributions from lawyers who practice in front of him.
And when you really read the story, you see that most of it is just Larry Forgy trying to turn sour grapes into vintage wine again. I wish Forgy would just go ferment away somewhere, and shut up and never been seen or heard from again on the political front.
Posted by: nonya a/k/a KPAC Jr. at August 24, 2004 11:42 AMWhy do you hate America, KPAC jr? Democracy and the American People making there voice heard is as old as the 'Sons of Liberty'. But I'll leave your negative hate speech alone for the moment.
Although he's not one of the CFK 12, I'm curious as to your thoughts on the Northrup /Miller race?
Isn't she the dirty little politico who got caught in that Westar /influence peddling scam? tsk, tsk, tsk, what a naughty girl.
And the current tracking polls in Louisville show Miller in the lead; and for the incumbent being under that magic 50% spells big trouble for 'Westar' Annie.
However we do agree on one thing- November is not going to lack for excitement.
You lilly-livered idiots should have put me on your list. I only play a conservative to the religious nuts in Wilmore. You can count on me. We will kill tax modernization, then we will undermine the marriage amendment, then we will borrow money instead of balancing the budget, then we will expand medicaid and raise taxes "slightly" for people with incomes over $75,000!!!
Aaauuuaaaaauuuuuggghhhhhhh!!!!!
Ralph Long? He's way too conservative.

Whether or not the H-L is doing a number on Philpot is not the issue. Most people do not know or really care who his father is. The truth is, Philpot is a religious zealot who is on a mission to save all the female souls on the train to hell for getting a divorce. He is against all women who choose a divorce, abortion, education or whatever. His opinion on women is so obvious to any voter with even half a brain cell. Women should be barefoot and pregnant and under their husband's total control. He is biased, sexist and is for the man, uh, person who has the most money or influence.
Have you sat in his courtroom and seen him in action? I have, more than I care to admit to wasting a beautiful day on. He has his own little game of "justice." Philpot did not decide anything for me. I was there for something else, research on biased judges. Trust me, he is in a class all his own. I heard him tell one mother seeking help with child care from her ex while she attended college for two years,"Mam, do you think you will make more money after college or are you delaying the inevitable?" meaning getting a job. He went on to lecture her telling her he knew many people who made less money after college. Sorry, but a good judge keeps his personal opinion to himself. It was not his place to offer advice on the financial merits of a college education to this mother. Would he have said the same to a man seeking to better himself? I doubt it.
To another mother, whose lawyer had just told him that she also was in college but would not need as much assistance because she had recently qualified for state aid while in school like food stamps and Wic, Philpot said sarcastically,"Mam, where do you live, in the hills." As a woman, I felt bad for her. He humilated her. And to another woman, who wanted her rich husband to "get on with his life and told Philpot that the marriage was over, Philpot being the crusader he is, told her he was going to grant her husband's motion to force her to attend marriage counseling sessions. He said," Mam, I know there had to be a spark in your marriage at some point and who knows if you go to these sessions I am ordering, you all may get back together and not have to get a divorce." Sound, like anyone we know who lived in Germany?
Who is he to dictate how that woman lives her life? Another mother had her catholic faith blasted and made fun of in a corny joke. No one laughed but him and the father of course. All this was in one day. On a different day, to another woman in a custody fight over a pet dog, Philpot told her she could put the dog "down" for all he cared. He said he just did not want to hear about the dog again. Seems he hates dogs and women. Go sit in his courtroom and see for yourself. He is a career politican, who owes favors to many cronies. Does Lexington, Kentucky really want a judge who ignores the most innocent in the city, the children.
Did you know he was past international president of a religious charity organization earning over $100,000 before resigning last December right before his buddy Fletcher appointed him to the bench in January? An inside source told me that the leaders of that charity take expensive golfing vacations all over the world and charge them back to the charity.
As in the Crosbie incident, doing this may not be illegal, but it appears to be unethical. Many Lexington citizens donate to that charity. Bet they don't know that their donations are spent on the "greens." All judges don't "do" want Philpot did, throw a case to the lawyer who donated to his campaign. Some judges are honest and ethical and believe in a little thing called the Constitution. Heard of it? Philpot said in the H-L article that the only people interested in judicial races are the lawyers. I hope not. This is the buddy boy system in full swing. Voters can choose in November to elect a man not connected to the boys in Frankfort. Ross Stinetorf has worked in all areas of family law. He has two children and has worked for the welfare of children throughout his career.
He is the better choice.
