Our 1st Meeting

How can we bring Change for Kentucky?

At the request of Gov. Howard Dean, campaign organizers and volunteers came together Wednesday night across the country to hold “MeetUps” with a dual purpose: to close the books on the amazing Dean for America presidential campaign AND to make plans on how we carry forward this revolutionary movement of “people-powered politics” and grass-roots advocacy.

In Lexington, Dean organizers and supporters raised imaginary glasses Wednesday night to toast the campaign of Gov. Dean, its successes and the lessons learned. Afterward, we shifted gears and took the opportunity to hold an initial planning meeting to decide how we can move Change for Kentucky forward, both the idea and our new organization.

With our stated goals of bringing the average citizen into the political process and supporting progressive ideas and candidates, the main question on the floor was: What initiatives, projects and platforms should Change for Kentucky support, and why?

Here’s some of what we heard (we want YOUR comments below):

Outreach to Lapsed Voters, New Democrats and Undecided Independents
Bringing the message of progressive policies and candidates to those voters who have fallen outside of (or were turned off to) the political process

New Candidates to Run for Office
Supporting (with campaign activities, organization and money) new candidates for public office who support progressive policies and advocate real Change for Kentucky.

Grass-Roots Campaign Support for Progressive Candidates
Fundraising, electioneering and “boots-on-the-ground” campaign support for those candidates who support progressive ideas and the Change for Kentucky goals of bringing new people into political process.

Issue Identification and Advocacy
Identifying progressive issues that can bring real Change for Kentucky, and hold candidates for office accountable for addressing (or not addressing) these issues in every election.

Democratic Party Leadership Elections
Bringing new leadership into the Democratic Party via precinct, legislative district and county Democratic Party elections. This initiative begins April 17, 2004. Check back soon for more details,

Precinct Organization
Walking your neighborhood, encouraging neighbors to become politically active. Issues-based house parties and “get-out-the-vote” drives during elections.

Coordination with Other Political Groups
Bringing political organizations (Green Party, Progressives, League of Conservation Voters, etc.) together to plan coordinated activities that cross agenda lines.

Voter Education
Simplified answers to common questions about upcoming elections, registration deadlines, filing for office and campaign organizing.

Civic Responsibility and Educational Activities
Supporting community and school-based initiatives that advocate civic education and increased participation in government for adults and soon-to-vote teenagers.

These are just a few. What else can we do? What are we missing? Please add your thoughts to our COMMENTS section. There are many people reading this blog, so we encourage candor and a free-flow of ideas. POST NOW!

It looks good. You have encapsulated well what all we discussed. Unfortunately the time limitations probably limited the ideas we were able to capture. Once a week or month highlight a different area of our goals so ideas can percolate on that specific topic. The first to be highlighted should be leadship elections and general ideas. We want our problem to be sorting through too many ideas, not too few.

Not exactly on topic but: Thanks Leslie (on discussion@kentuckyfordean) for the heads up. WOW! If anyone missed Sunday night's CNN production of 'Life Inside the Dean Campaign', then it will show again three times next Saturday (the 13th; 6AM, 8PM, 11PM); so cancel your wedding, your funeral, or whatever. You must see this! Although you will feel the heartbreak all over again, you will see the humanity, the mass, the enthusiasm, and particularly the youth of the Howard Dean campaign. Youth have always led the popular uprisings that succeeded. They are energetic, idealistic, imaginative and they are not yet entrenched in 'career', which inhibits political activism. I had been wondering where all that energetic dedication had gone since Howard Dean's appeal was wrecked in the minds of Iowa commonfolk by the pervasive (and perverse) power of tabloid television over the democracy of the internet. The CNN production convinced me that the force is alive. Mark my word: Howard Dean will be our President someday. Meanwhile, we who made this thing work as gloriously as it did must now direct our energies, our anger, to the achievable goal; the defeat of one George W. Bush, and with him his sleazy cadre of self righteous gangsters. We have the power!

To add to our list of ideas & concerns, I'm posting a comment I received from the KY Greens list in response to my announcement of our new(ish) organization:

Is our group working on revamping the way Federal and State Government figure taxes? The tax burden has been shifted more and more to the individual wage earner and away from corporations. As they have gained more privileges they pay less and less of the tax burden. This needs to be changed. Also most State taxes have not keep up with the way we now do business, and tax codes need to be changed to reflect this. Is your organization working on this?

I know that Gov. Dean was on the Kentucky ballot, but I'm wondering if he still is. The Ky Democratic Party site lists only four candidates for President. John Edwards is on the list, but Dean is not. what gives? (Just heard the Oregon Sec. of State unilaterally deleted Dean's name.) Does anyone know whether that's happened here? Thanks.

Posted by: Deborah at March 9, 2004 01:33 PM

Deborah-

YES, Governor Dean is still on the ballot in Kentucky. Jane Jensen and I filed the paperwork ourselves back in January with the Sec. of State.

The Democratic Party website is, unfortunately, not always updated.

Click my name (below) to go to the Secretary of State website listing the official candidates for KY office in the May primary.

I've been reading some of the comments on Blog for America and Change for America about the CNN thing, as well as talking to Leslie a bit, and I have some concerns. How much of Change for Kentucky will be influenced by Joe Trippi's group and how much if it will be influenced by whatever Howard Dean's group comes out with on the 18th? Are we going to continue to be Deanmocrats or will we become egoTrippis?

Posted by: Anna at March 9, 2004 03:58 PM

Good question Anna. You can see from our first post that we have framed our initial objectives following what Howard has referred to on DeanforAmerica.com as his "framework" for what is to come...I literally cut and pasted the set of bullet points for our mission statement (my scholarly mind is now figuring our how to cite that). We felt strongly that we needed to move forward to capture the excitement people had coming off of the special election win and be ready for our March Meetup. This organization is based on the "movement" part of the Dean campaign, the part that asks folks to inform themselves, question their elected leaders, dialogue with neighbors, and vote!

We are, at the same time, a local organization of people who we hope will speak their minds and follow their hearts. Some folks are huge Trippi fans and enjoy the dialogue on ChangeforAmerica.com. That does not mean we are or will be following Joe. Rumor has it that Dean's new org will be less grassroots than the campaign...perhaps our group can provide that down to earth element. In many ways we have to stay tuned...but we're definitely listening!

Posted by: Jane at March 9, 2004 04:52 PM

Thanks very much, Jeremy! I knew you all had gotten him on the ballot (though I've lurked here I never posted before) and I got paranoid when I heard what had happened in Oregon. I will write Dean in regardless; unity is required only in November!

Posted by: Deborah at March 9, 2004 07:14 PM

Thanks, Jane. I'm all for grassroots work in Kentucky, just not too thrilled with the divisiveness that Trippi has brought to the Dean camp.

Posted by: Anna at March 10, 2004 01:42 PM

I missed the CNN show Saturday. Was asked to speak at an event in FL and, though it was tough to miss the cold weather here in order to be in 81 degrees there, I just had to do it. So, I don't know what the "Trippi group" mentioned above is. Could someone kindly fill me in?
